Attempts at preservation accelerate the ephemeral. The purpose is to continually ruin things -- to be consistently saying goodbye to beauty.
Butler is in New York City as a research fellow at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Currently thinking on her M.A. thesis, she proposes the use of architectural history and ethnography to explore the relationship between artists and institutions. Through this study she wishes to write on both the Cooper-Hewitt museum (now occupying the heritage home of the American industrialist and philanthropist Carnegie family), with (post) industrial factories used as artists’ studios.
In the mean time she makes books, writes performances and keeps appointments. You can find her in the suite 405 office, where she offers an assortment of fancy mixed nuts and dark chocolate.
Butler works as an assistant for Parsons Prof Susan Yelavich, CHM travelling exhibitions curator Cynthia Smith, and conceptual artist Agnes Denes.
